Calandra is a very competent sea captain, running her vessel firmly but fairly, all under her command know her to be compassionate as long as the reason is just; very few realise how sensitive she is to the emotions of her crew… and to those who ‘own’ her. Given her lack of true freedom, she is quite insecure, and spends her personal time out at sea day dreaming, imagining how things could of been; and what she secretly hopes will be one day.

Hidden deep within her psyche is a well of resentment that she harbours for her family; her mother for abondoning them, her father for turning to greed and effectively placing her in the situation she is in. Though she resents the powerful family that holds her 'captive', it is quite a bit less than to her own kin; and since becoming the captain of the Radiant Star, has always found them civil (though snobbish) towards her. Her emotions where Alistair are concerned are different, in every aspect he is a typical St. James, yet she senses he cares for her… though whether in truth or as a lie she doesn’t know; as a result she is quite submissive towards him and easily flustered at times, though he has often commented that she never averts her gaze.

 

Calandra is the last to admit she has any magical skills, but many a shipman say her songs have some magical aspect, how else would her ship have such a consistent and successful voyages.
