Scalestain is a styler that allows you to make small adjustments to the shape of your dragon. A dragon with velvet scales may grow a dashing mane, a scaled dragon may grow a line of plates, and a feathered dragon can gain some plumes. Scalestains may be combined to create larger traits, such as very long wing extensions, plumes, manes, and even outlandish spines. Here is the dragon we’ll use for our examples, along with the approximate max size of a scaly line of plates.
Range
Scalestain only affects some traits. Refer to specific trait guides to see if they can be affected. You may ‘split’ the coverage of Scalestain into multiple pieces, but it will only affect one trait at the time. It can’t adjust both the wings and the scales, even if it’s below the size limit. It will not create holes or piercings. It will not create material that isn’t there (such as a mane of hair on a dragon with no fur or velvet). Here is an example of the dragon's wings with the Scalestain affecting one area, then with the Scalestain affecting two areas.
Color Rules
Scalestain may dye the area as if it was affected by one Skittertint. Accents may appear on the traits. You may extend markings and traits to the stylized area.
Layering
When adding color, the color will sit on top of any other markings.
Shape
The shape may be as natural or as artificial as you like, as long as the trait is still recognizable, and as long as you have enough Scalestains to cover it. You may make symmetrical changes (such as wing extensions on both wings) without expending an extra Scalestain.
Special Interactions
- Areas covered by Pollen cannot be stylized with Scalestain, with the exception of leather and fins. It cannot stylize anything over Transparent Skin.
- Skittertint may affect this area the same way it would other traits. In example, a Mane may be dyed a solid color, gradient, or in bands by a Skittertint. Scalestain includes one free Skittertint on the affected trait.
- Magic effects may extend to these areas of the dragon.
- If you no longer want the Scalestain edit, you may choose not to include it, or even switch it to a different area in future updates. The dragon still has access to every Scalestain you apply to it, even if you choose not to use it.
- Display may affect the natural color of the dragon and markings that extend to the stylized area. However, it will not affect any dye applied with the Scalestain.
Common Problems
Below: This edit would require two Scalestains, not one.
Below: This edit creates a mane on a dragon with no fur. A dragon will need velvet scales, protofeathers, or similar fluffy traits to create a mane like this.
